Week 6: Every Way Like Christ

Coach's Corner

Warm-Up

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ.” — Ephesians 4:15a

Let’s share about our favorite athlete.

  1. Who is an athlete that you want to be like?
  2. What about that athlete do you admire?

Workout

There’s probably a good reason why you have a favorite athlete or team. They are good at what they do, and you want to be good like them! When you watch them compete, it helps you learn to get better at what you do. What have you learned from your favorites?

Here are a few fun facts about how the typical Olympic athlete trains every day. Raise your hand if you do any of these things too!

  • Olympic athletes train six to seven days a week.
  • Olympic athletes practice and train eight to 10 hours a day.
  • Olympic athletes get eight hours of sleep.
  • Olympic athletes avoid eating junk food.

That’s incredible! Can you imagine the dedication it takes to make it to the elite level of international competition?

While it’s helpful to have great role models as a competitor, it’s even more important to have someone to look up to when you’re growing in your relationship with God. For that, Jesus is your role model!

Take some time with the person next to you to discuss some ways you are learning how to become more like Jesus.

The things you are learning matter because you are rooted and growing in every way like Christ! Here’s what the Bible says about being rooted in Christ:

“And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” — Colossians 2:6-7

Just like Jesus was sent to be an example of God’s love to the world, you are called to become more like Him and show others who He is.
The Bible explains that, “…God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time…” — 2 Timothy 1:9

Here are just a few ways that Jesus showed us the perfect example of what it means to live a holy life:

  • Jesus was disciplined.
  • Jesus was patient.
  • Jesus was humble.
  • Jesus was honest.
  • Jesus was courageous.

Let’s take a few minutes and discuss the following questions as a group:

  1. What are some ways that Jesus showed those attributes throughout His life?
  2. What are some other things about Jesus that we should use as an example of how to live a holy life?

Let’s go back to today’s key verse:

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ.” — Ephesians 4:15a

The first part of that Scripture is a short but compelling description of how being rooted in Christ and growing in every way to be like Him will empower you in your calling.

God wants you to live like Jesus so others will see that you are a new creation. His purpose for you is to share the Good News of salvation to everyone around you and make a difference in your world.

Wrap-Up

As we wrap up, can anyone tell me what’s the most extreme thing you have done to train for athletic competition? Did having a goal or purpose make it easier to stick with it?

Now tell me, what do you think is the most difficult aspect of living like Jesus? How do you think knowing that you are called for a greater purpose might help you answer the challenge?

Let’s close out this Huddle Time in prayer:

“Dear God, I want to be rooted in Your Word and be strong, willing, and able to accept the calling and purpose You have for my life. Amen.”
