Youth coaching is a unique situation. It is something you chose to do (or maybe you were volun-told). Your livelihood does not depend on the outcome of your season. You don’t have to worry about the transfer portal. What does weigh heavy on the youth coach is imparting a love for the sport, athletes who are coachable and know their value is not determined by a scoreboard.
One of the only ways to not let the weight of youth coaching drag you down is to remain in Christ. In John 15, Jesus uses the word remain 10 times. Many of those references are a call to remain in Him. How many times have you reminded your young athletes of a fundamental skill? Those reminders, while annoying, are important to the success of the athlete and team. The same applies to Jesus’ constant reminder to remain in Him.
If we want a life that has the Fruit of the Spirit we have to remain in Jesus. It is a partnership. Otherwise, we are just striving and pushing on our own which never produces fruit that lasts.
But, how do we remain in Jesus? We spend time with Him in prayer and Scripture reading. When our coaching role weighs on us and things get stressful, we take a moment and remember Him and all that He has done for us. We fill our hearts and minds with things from above – music, podcasts, news.
When we remain in Jesus – stay in His presence – our lives begin to look more and more like His and the Fruit of the Spirit flourishes.
GO:
- What is something that stresses you out about youth coaching?
- What is some fruit you have seen in your life from remaining in Jesus?
WORKOUT:
OVERTIME:
“Lord, I want to remain in You. Grow a desire for the things from above in my life. Keep reminding me to remain in You when I wander away. Thank You that You desire fruit in my life. Guide my coaching. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
