The Coaching Calling

“He who calls you is faithful; he will do it.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:24

When I entered the youth sports arena as a coach it was really just a way for me to connect with my third son. I volunteered to help fifteen 8 year-olds learn the fundamentals of basketball but after five years it was so much more than basketball. It was relationship with young athletes, a bond with my son and new friendships. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I am glad I said yes.

Coaching is a calling – even though sometimes it doesn’t feel like it. And if we are called, God is faithful. In 1 Thessalonians, Paul is reassuring the believers that God does what He says He will do. He is faithful. Being called into coaching is a big deal. Having influence over young athletes is a big responsibility. One of my coaching goals was to make sure that at the end of the season the athletes wanted to play again the next year.

Being a Christian coach carries an even bigger calling. Not only are we tasked with imparting joy of the game, but we are tasked with reflecting our beliefs in our words and actions all while everyone is watching. We don’t have to prove ourselves in that way. 1 Thessalonians says He called you – He is faithful – He will do it. God does the work through us. And praise the Lord, when we mess up and yell at an official or get frustrated the game plan didn’t work, His mercies are new (Lamentations 3:23).

As the season gets underway, remember your coaching calling. Think about why you said yes to that call and pray for your season and young athletes.

  1. Why are you a coach? Do you feel it is a calling?
  1. What are two ways you can reflect your Christian beliefs this season?

Philippians 4:19

John 15:7

“Lord, thank You for Your calling on us to coach. Instill in us a boldness to reflect You in our words and actions. Help us to steward our influence well. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
