“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen.” – Romans 11:36

Every sport has a set of fundamental skills that every player needs to work on to be successful. As coaches we build in time during practice and pre-season workouts to work on them. Many times our athletes don’t have the best attitude when it comes to practicing those skills because they feel like they’ve got them down. But if you watch the warm-ups for any professional sport, you will see athletes drilling the fundamentals. Why? Because without a strong base, the rest of your performance suffers.

There are fundamentals of the faith as well. If we are supposed to live a life that reflects glory back to God through good fruit, we need to know how to do that.

  1. Prayer: talking and listening is important in any relationship, and it is really important in your relationship with God. Prayer is how we let God know how we feel about what is going on in our lives. It is a time for us to thank Him and also to say sorry for our sins.  Just as important, is taking time to listen during prayer.  It is okay for there to be silence.
  1. Bible study: To know God you have to study His Word.  Reading the Bible can seem intimidating but like any new skill once you practice for a while you get more comfortable. The Bible is not meant to be read front to back like most books.  Start with one of the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.  Or read one of Paul’s letters to a growing church in the New Testament. Use the YouVersion Bible App to find a reading plan. The point is, to produce the fruit that leads to glorifying God you need to study His words and ways.
  1. Christian community: We know the benefit of teammates. In our faith, having friends who also love Jesus and want to know more about Him will help you in your faith journey. Join a small group or community group through your church. Invite other coaches to join you in studying the Bible or discussing a sermon or Christian podcast.  Teammates are one fundamental you should not skip.
  1. Which of these three fundamentals do you feel like you have a good base in?
  1. Which one do you know you need more practice on?
  1. Make a plan to build these three faith fundamentals.
  • Hebrews 10:25
  • Philippians 4:6
  • 2 Timothy 3:16

“Lord, help me to build a foundation of faith through prayer, Scripture study and Christian community. I want my life to glorify You and I want to produce the fruits of faith. In Your name, amen.”
