Coach Devo Wk 6

“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.” – Galatians 5:22-23

Coaching is often based on outcomes. Successful coaches win. Great coaches produce D-1 caliber athletes. Amazing coaches sign large contracts to prestigious programs. On the other end of the spectrum, youth coaches and volunteer coaches work with a different set of outcomes. Successful outcomes include skill growth, mentality maturity and a deepened love of the game and competition in general.

Outcomes in our faith look different than any other area of our lives. The Bible calls it fruit. Jesus says in Matthew 7:16 and then again in verse 20, “You’ll recognize them by their fruit.” In context, Jesus is talking about different teachers – the false ones and the real ones. It is the fruit in their lives that differentiates them.

What does that look like? As Paul wrote to the people in Galatia, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control should be defining characteristics of our lives as followers of Jesus. In coaching and out, we should be people who are producing these fruits in our interactions, thoughts and relationships.

  1. Are you producing fruit of the spirit? Which ones are easiest for you? Which ones do you need to work on?
  1. How can you demonstrate the fruit of the spirit in your coaching?
  • John 13:35
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
  • Philippians 4:8-9

“Lord, I want to be fruitful in my spiritual life. I want to grow into a person who reflects You more and more so that people see a difference in me. Guide me as I coach and interact with others to be a person who produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  In Your name, amen.”
