Coach Devo 5

Week 5

“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” – Colossians 3:17

Billy Graham famously said, “One coach will impact more lives in a year than an average person will in a lifetime.” That impact can create lifelong competitors or one-year players. It can build up a player’s value or it can tear precious self-esteem to pieces. A coach who claims Jesus as their Savior has an additional responsibility. Will your impact draw your players closer to Jesus or distance them?

Paul directs the church in Colossae to “do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” The words they spoke should reflect their relationship with Jesus. The business they conducted should reflect their relationship with Jesus. How they dealt with other people should reflect their relationship with Jesus. Everything.

Practically, what does that look like for a coach? If we are to give God glory in our coaching, then whatever we do as a coach needs to be in the name of Jesus. It means we strive to do our best to build up our players and hold them accountable without demeaning them. It means we withhold our opinions on officials calls and when we blow it, we apologize. It means we seek the Lord before practice, before games, and after. Not just seeking a win but to be used by Him, however He sees fit to use us that day.

  1. In what areas of your coaching can you really focus on giving God glory?
  1. What is one way you can help draw your team closer to the Lord?

Colossians 3:12-16; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1Thessalonians 4:1-2

“Lord, I want to honor You in all that I do. Watch over my words and ways and align them with Yours. I desire to be a coach who makes an eternal impact. I can only do that with Your power and presence. Be with me! In Your name, amen.”
