Proven

“The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.” — Deuteronomy 31:8

How proven are you as a coach? Looking solely at my record as a middle school girls basketball coach, I am a terrible coach. In my two years as a coach, I won 3 games. A record like that doesn’t make me look very proven.

Each of the years I coached I had a rag tag team of girls made up of several who had never played basketball before. Some were still learning how to dribble a ball. Our practices were full of fundamentals and a lot of encouragement. Our games were almost always lopsided. Is a coach only proven by a win/loss record?

If we earn our worth and try to prove ourselves as coaches by how our team performs, we will always come up short. On the other hand, if we rest our worth in the Lord – who goes before us – we can rest easy that we have nothing to prove. He proved it already when He sent Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins on the cross. “While we were still sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). We were unproven; sinners who could not be in the relationship with God. And because He died for us we have nothing left to prove.

You are proven as a coach and a person if you have put your trust in Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross. There is nothing else to prove. Wins and losses might be looked at by those around us but we are assured that the Lord “will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you.”

“Lord, we are grateful that we have nothing to prove as coaches. Thank You for proving Your love for us through Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross. We are grateful that You are with us. Be with us this season. Guide us as we coach our team. Lead us as we lead our players. We want to glorify You in our words and actions. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
