Power of Words
READY:
“Death and life ate in the power of the tongue, and those who live it will eat its fruit.” – Proverbs 18:21
SET:
This passage of scripture is key to the health of your players and ultimately your team. Do you intentionally and consistently speak life into all your players? Have you created a culture that promotes powerful words that speak life into every player on your team?
Whether you are a follower of Jesus Christ or not, you have an amazing opportunity to build up your players with words that honor God. Words that have the power to encourage and give hope. Words that give life! Your words can help your players reach their God given destiny and dreams.
The power of words is no more evident than the creation story found in Genesis 1 when God created the heavens and the earth by using–WORDS! What God spoke came to life. Jesus Christ used words to heal and raise people from the dead. And because words still have power, we must choose wisely the words we use. I’m not talking about flattery–saying positive things that you do not really mean. At times, hard truths must be said but you must speak hard truths with love and kindness.
GO:
- Reflect on a time when a coach spoke life into you. Who was it and what did he/she say?
- Identify words of “death” (discouraging/demeaning) that you may be speaking to your players. How can you change those to words of life?
WORKOUT:
Psalm 19:14; Psalm 141:3; Ephesians 4:29
OVERTIME:
“Lord, my words matter. Make me aware of how I use my words and help me to build my players up with the words that I speak. I pray my words would give life. In Your name, amen.”
