Warm-Up
“As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.”– John 17:18
(Take a few minutes and set up a small obstacle course with materials from practice.)
Hello everyone! As you can see, we have an obstacle course that we are going to do to start our time together. I’m going to show you how it’s done first. Then each one of you will get a chance to try it.
Did it help to see me do it first? Yeah, it’s easier to do something when you have seen it done before. Jesus came to earth to show us how to live. So now we can follow His lead.
Workout
Did you know that you have two jobs when playing this sport? You have your specific position to play, but you also have a larger purpose – to help the team by playing nice and not getting super upset when things don’t go your way. That’s called being a good sport. You have a small goal and a big goal.
The same idea goes for our life with Jesus. We each are going to play different roles in life. We will all grow up and have different careers, live in different places, and have different skills. Even with all those differences, we are all called to do two things: give glory to God and tell others about Jesus. In John 13:31, Jesus told His disciples that He was setting an example for them. He gave God glory by how He lived and when He died on the cross for us. We can also give glory to God through our actions, our hearts, and our words.
Jesus’ purpose on earth was to bring humans and God together again by defeating sin. That was His specific position – His role. Our specific position is to go out and tell others about Jesus. Matthew 28:18-20 says, “…Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always…” Jesus said that our job is to go and tell our friends all the good things God has done for us! If we do that, we will also be glorying God, which is the big goal in life!
Wrap-Up
What is something you could tell others about God?
“Father, thank You for making each of us for a specific purpose: to share You with the world. Teach us how to talk more about You to our friends and help us to glorify you with our words and actions. Amen.”
